For the D.S.M Live Brief i was given 'Train Operator' i needed to come up with a way to make travelling more exciting and enjoyable.
I first looked at BBC travel and how they've had a debate about ways to improve travel i felt this would be interesting as there may be things i hadnt thought of.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/legacy/haveyoursay/2010/11/how_should_train_overcrowding.html
- Swiss Federal Railways is Europe's most timely railway
- "You could get rid of a couple of first class carriages on the London to Birmingham trains. The amount of times i've been on when its standing room only in cattle class whilst first class is completely deserted suggests that supply of first class carriages far outstrips demand."
- The problem lies with commuters rather than long distance travelling commuter trains at busy times are always over crowed.
- Makes people miserable having to commute when the trains are so busy
APPS
I decided a possible APP might be a good solution to make the journeys more enjoyable. I had a look at some Apps that already exist these apps were for tickets.
They were very detailed but souly for tickets and music events.
TRAVEL APPS
I decided to next look at travel apps.
Jetsmater-
If you’re in the market for a private flight somewhere, you can now do so using JetSmarter, the Uber of the private jet world.App users search for various carriers, request flights based on their own schedule and pay for the flight using the app. Pick-ups and drop-offs happen in private airports in or near the requested location.
Entrain-
The members-only concierge service is opening its door to all through its latest app. Users can purchase latest event tickets and lavish Valentine’s Day gifts, for example, within the app’s boutique. The app also provides recommendations from restaurants to spas — they named it “Q Insider."Members can still request personalised services -- a table at booked out restaurants, a private jet to Krabi or the limited edition Birkin bag, say, through the app.The app currently covers 50 cities.
History of the rail way-
Having a quick think about the history of the train line , the worlds first public railway was opened in 1825 in stockton and darlington where i am from.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockton_and_Darlington_Railway
The Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) was a railway company that operated in north-east England from 1825 to 1863. The world's first public railway to use steam locomotives, its first line connected collieries near Shildon with Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington, and was officially opened on 27 September 1825. The movement of coal to ships rapidly became a lucrative business, and the line was soon extended to a new port and town at Middlesbrough. Passengers were carried in coaches drawn by horses until carriages hauled by steam locomotives were introduced in 1833.
My Concept-
-To have a celebration off the first public steam railway in the world. Producing an App and other promotional material for train go-ers. The App will focus around customer loyalty and offer rewards to frequent travellers Such as free wifi , games & entertainment , maps , travel map suggestions , interactive tickets & planner.
-Being a member of this app & celebration allows you to access free wifi when traveling on the trains. The games available range from children to adult games including classic games such as cross word puzzle and two player games such backgammon.
-The entertainment is available and his things to keep children entertained also british films and documentaries.
-Travel map suggestions are a great way to see what british history is available at certain points on your long haul journeys. By simply holding up your phone the app will get the closest historical point and give you the background history.
-Interactive tickets are a great point of the App , its less hassle and easy to scan your phone when walking through the barrier than having to look for your ticket.
-Planner - is a great way to plan your day and when your most recent journeys.
-A perk of the app - If the train has been left over crowded and you have a high priority score on your app your able to sit in first class free of charge.
Aesthetics -
I will produce a mocked up App & other promotional material. Such as head cover for the chair , coffee & cups ,sweet bags & a leaflet to let new passengers know about the perks. The over arching theme will be British heritage 200 years on the rail way line.
THE BIG IDEA
What should it stand for?
The brands aim is to reflect the history since the first public stream train was every built. It stands for history , pride , & Heritage.
Why should it exist?
It should exist as it provides people with the chance to look at the most historical points near to them. In the form of an App also providing people with British culture such as films and entrainment.
Why should people care?
Its educational and interesting way to learn about British heritage. It also makes your train journeys much more enjoyable.
What makes it different?
Its not your average heritage or history App & Planner. It gives more of a map finder locater section and films and entertainment.

I am really excited about my concept and look forward to receiving feedback before i can take my concept to the next stage.
