D.S.M - Branding

DSM - BRANDING - British Heritage themed railway company.

Before i could begin designing i need to make a few design decisions i made sure i knew what i was calling my company and my the deliverables i would be designing for.

To start the branding for my British heritage app I needed to make sure i had the most appropriate typeface to represent it. First i had decided to go with British heritage rail network. but then i felt it was too long so i took off the network.

Logo development

For the logo i first started to create a half gauge to represent a train gauge and time.

Using small arrow and dashes to make up the gauge.

I added a small tag line to the logo. 'An anniversary of the first steam train est. 1825.'
The logo was to plain so i chose some colours for the variations I specifically picked these colours as they are typical British colours.

Colour schemes used for branding & promotion -
Variations-

After adding colour i didn't think it was working so i began to try other variations.

Blue and Maroon Type -

Designing the App-

First page when signing up to the app -

I Chose to use an iPhone 5 app mockup. I placed the logo in the centre and a log in and sign up page to the front of the  page towards the bottom.

I next began designing the icons and the individual pages, I used a house icon for the home page. I wanted to have the first page as home so i also made a little menu list on the top corner so it was easy to move around the app.

For the next page which is the historical locator I decide i would have map pin pointer icon.

I decided to create all the icons at once then go through adding the titles on the pages-

Home/Historical/Film

Home/Historical/Film/History

Home/Historical/Film/History/Games/RecentJourneys

I decided that after putting all the icons together that there was too many and it was over crowded but i needed that much information so i decided to remove the home button as i had the little sub menu at the top that would allow the user to go back to the home page.

 Mocked up version-

Front Page app-

For the first page featuring the historical locator i put on a little step to show how to use that page and a little icon for the map icon drop.

I then added a search button so people are able to click search and be able to find the most historical point closest to them.

First to pages together -

I wanted to create a page which was for British heritage so i perfect page that i would have featured on my app would be perfect for families.  This page consists of a list of different categories for you to then go to the next page.I also added the film icon at the bottom of the page.

I decided to add box's around the typography to show more a button like style rather than have the words simply floating.

This page is for the British history page which consists of the first ever rail ways in Britain i felt this was an appropriate page as its about the rail ways its interesting to know where they originated from.

First four pages together:

The games page has a list of five different family British games it gives you the option to click on which every game you want to then you can choose how many players in the next round. I added the boxes around the text and the dice at the bottom of the page like the other app pages to keep consistency.

For the final page i chose to lay this out like i did with the first giving you some helpful information about the page. The recent journeys page allows you to look at where you have been and the option to re-book or save this. Also like the first page i had the icon and button in the similar place.

Last two pages-

IPhone Mockedup -

I next mocked up all the iPhone pages onto iPhone 5 mockups.

Landing page-
Historical Locator-

British Entertainment-
British History-
Family Games-
Recent Journeys-

IPAD mockup-

I decided to mockup my app on to some iPad screens so it could be viewed across platforms.

Other Promotional material-

Train Station advertising

Branding Guidelines -

British Heritage Rails is a loyal and prestigious company. Supplying transport to the public for over 100 years.
We aim to make your every experience first class. Our newest App. to celebrate the first ever steam train offers passengers a pleasant historical journey from A to B.
The guidelines provided for British Heritage Rails are not to be misused. The guidelines must be followed. The fonts and colours provided are to be always used. The logo should never be used larger or smaller than stated.

I really enjoyed doing this brief it was unusual to be designing for a train company but it was a nice chance to think outside the box and produce branding for a brief i wouldnt of normally chose. I think these types of briefs really help prepare us for industry as we won't always be designing for somthing we choose.

D.S.M Live brief - Research

D.S.M - Train Operator Research

For the D.S.M Brief i am focussing my App and designs around British heritage. One of the elements i wanted to look into was British sweet shops and try and gain some inspiration.

I really like the use of the black letter type although i want to make my App have a strong British heritage theme i don't want the app to be over crowded with large heavy type i still need to a contemporary feel to it.

I came across this ration book when i was researching i like the stamp used on it and the type writer typeface. This might be a possible idea to have some similar aesthetics on my app.
Looking at more contemporary british i came across these really nice tea tin boxes. Although they are really well designed i think there more appropaite for cooking and don't really give to much of a British heritage feel.

After looking at the small cutlery in the semi circle of the cooking cards above it remind me of clock. With then made me think of train station clock with then made me think of train gauge:

I think i will incorporate the train gauge into my logo as it represents my british heritage app perfectly as my app is about history so the clock can symbolise going back in time.

Before i can design anything i need to look at some British colours and some typefaces.

I next decided to look at some historical points in Britain i could have featured in my app-

Waddleston Manor - National Trust
When researching i found a english heritage website which is perfect for my app. It has loads of sections which i want to feature information on my App so its a great starting point.

Its really useful that it has a days out in north Yorkshire and a places to visit. It makes it easier for me to design my App around the most popular places.
I lastly wanted to look at some existing Apps before for inspiration:

Existing Apps -

All of these Apps offer similar things from maps to opening times and photography of locations. The english heritage app also has days out and in which region. There a great starting point for me as i can see how there laid out and put together.
