Evolution Print

EVOLUTION PRINT TALK

Evolution print come in to do a talk with the second years. Sam and i felt it would beneficial to go along to the talk so we would be able to speak to them at the end to ask them some questions about our student publication and what would be the best way to get it produced.

Notes from the talk:

- High end industrial printers.

- Commercial Printers

- Differs between web & print

- Litho - High volume of print

- Vegetable based inks

- Uncoated , matte , silk & gloss

- Uncoated - more organic theme

- How litho can work - Plate Costs

- What designers get wrong
  • Bleed ( crop marks)
  • Spot Colours concept to CMYK
  • Cant go into PDFS to tweak send over
  • Don't use spot colours with transparency doesn't work
  • Set the file as original spot colour
  • Don't use 600 MG in 700 space - don't make files to large
  • Artwork 300 DPI.
After the talk Sam and i explained the publication we were doing to Evolution print. We asked which would be the best way to get something printed in terms of stock cost paper size ect  He explained that its easier to work everything out once we know how many pages we will have and how getting something printed on litho can be cheaper than regular digital print. We also asked about the time scale and how long we would need to give them to get it back in time ; He explained usually around two weeks Sam and i agreed we would take leave up to a month to allow for print as we want to be prepared.

PRIMARY RESEARCH

After the evolution print talk Sam and I decided we would look at what already exists with in Leeds College of Art in terms of publications/prospectus's. We looked at the Graphic Design year book, The university prospectus and Nest magazine.

We wanted to make a point of looking at these publications so we didn't include any of this information in our student publication. The year book souly promotes the post third years and shows there work. The prospectus talks about every course in depth and whats available to us as students. Nest magazine features student news and articles.

We want to stray away from the student information in terms of whats on ect. and focus it more on the course and students work/accomplishments. We will talk about the course and how successful it is but without making it a marketing publication. I am glad we took the time to look through the publications at leeds college of art as we now know what not to include and how our publication will differ from whats already existing.
