Design Publication - Design & Production

Design Publication - Design & Production

The initial concept for the design publication stemmed from all the things i have been interested in this year. Especially fashion branding and editorial design. The way in which i have collected information this year and research would definitely be interviewing people so instead of just doing a look book design publication  decided i wanted it to be more of a magazine consisting of interviews and looking how i take out the most important parts.

Topshop was a big focus for me around my dissertation and i interviewed a designer for Topman and a buyer for Topshop. With this in mind i wanted to have sections in my publication briefly about the brands and then about the interviews primary or secondary.

I looked at Topshop magazine i already had and how i could implement some of there editorial styles into my own work.Such as the layout and way they lay the text and interviews out to keep a consistent theme.

Some full bleed images some with border:

Columns-

After speaking with Simon Jones it was clear to me that i was looking at the context of these brands. & it was more of a study. Looking at the specific parts of these companies and how they operate and what i take out of the interviews.

My title -  Specifics, A study of context.

reflecting on a number of factors from my dissertation i looked different sub categories such as.

WHAT IS  BRAND?

WHAT IS A BRAND PERSONALITE?

These were important things to my design practice this year as i wanted to know more in depth about the brand.

I Centralised the information to the page and used a simple grid.-

For the Topshop bio i began using two columns.

For the other page i used a full bleed image of Cara Delevigne who is a celebrity who models and is associated with Topshop.
Finished page.

Still keeping the look book style i used two images from London Fashion week.

Like my dissertation i wanted to back up the strength of these stores using quotes. I used a quote from Sir Philip Green who is the owner of Topshop Arcadia Group.

I used and image in the centre of the page and then the quote against the left hand side of the left page.

I repeated a similar layout here but using a quote from Kate moss ( Also a celebrity model for Topshop)

For the interviews i used the column method again.
For the opposite page i used a quote from the interview.

This interview was a secondary interview. As Victoria Beckham inspired parts of my cop3 i felt it appropriate to put it in.

The next part of the publication was to design the Tru Grain section.

Tru Grain section-

For every double page spread with the interview on I copied the interview onto a another document and highlighted all the information i didn't want to be printed in white colour so it only left the remaining words.

When the information is printed on the tru grain as it will be see through it will simply sit on top of the existing publication.

When choosing how i was going to bind the publication proved to be very hard. I hard originally planned to saddle stich the publication but due to how i had printed it i realised it would either be to thick and i couldn't have the true grain in there how i wanted to.

I decided to cut everything down to singular sheets and bind it with the aco clips.

I had to rest the words on top of the paper mark around the outside of the paper and then cut out tru grain to fit.

It was very difficult as the tru grain was fiddly and if it wasn't cut properly would tear.

Before going to hole punch the publication needed to use white tack to make sure the tru grain would stay in the exact same place.

It was a struggle to hole punch because it was so thick but worked out well after dividing the pages down the middle and hole punching them again.
I was really pleased with the outcome.

Unfortunately due the method of printing and binding i had done. I decided to reprint several pages where the text overlapped and the image was shortened due to the binding.
It was simple to re-add the pages because of the binding so that was a plus.

I am really pleased with my publication its been difficult but the result was exactly how i wanted it. If i was to repeat this brief i would make sure that i knew the binding method and printing method would work exactly how i wanted before hand. Due to time constraints i didnt produced a mockup which might of saved my trouble with the binding but i still had a finished product i was happy with.
